Quick reminder....tomorrow we will have our purchase day at the book fair from 10:15-10:30. I saw a few of you tonight at the family night, but if you didn't make it, you have the opportunity tomorrow. :)
Math- This week we are working on explaining our thinking, tally marks as well as one more one less and two more two less. We are also practicing counting by 5's to help with this concept. (one, two, three, four, slide the five- to help with tally marks) and (using hands to clap back and forth with a partner to count by 5's to 120.) Something to be aware of....not only are we determining a number that is two more/ two less, but we are reading the number and having to show two more/two less using tally marks. Children are not only allowed, but encouraged to use math tools to help them with their day to day work as well as assessments. Such items include a hundreds chart, base ten blocks, and number lines.
..Our end of Unit 1 math assessment will be Thursday, Sept 15th. A study guide will be coming home this Thursday with your child. An answer key for the study guide will be provided online after the guide has been sent home. ...
RELA- Reading: We are focusing on asking and answering questions for a fiction story.
ELA- articles (a, an, the) We are learning when it is appropriate to use 'a' in front of words that begin with a consonant, and 'an' in front of words that begin with a vowel. We are also working on asking/telling sentences again. Today your little ones made headbands with asking and telling sentences on them.
Writing- This week we are learning to write 'seeds' instead of watermelons. ;) Meaning, instead of writing about 'the time I went to Six Flags' children are narrowing it down into a tiny 'seed'...something more like, 'The Ride of Doom was so thrilling.' This helps them get more emotion & details out rather than telling what happened step by step during the day. We are also looking at ways to bring our writing to life. We can do this by having our characters move, and talk. (Yes, your little love is going to be adding some dialogue into their writing! Can you believe it?!)
Handwriting-We are starting Ms. Marnie this week. This is a TV teacher that is very enthusiastic about letter formation and helps the children with proper letter formation for upper and lowercase letters. (She is not interactive.) The children will be getting workbooks and you may hear about Ms. Marnie.
Science- Well, week 2 of Thomas Jefferson is in full swing. Today we took notes while we read about him. (I know, note taking already!! Yes, teach them while they're young how to pull out important information from text and write it in a fashion that helps them later.) We learned that not only did he help shape our country by writing the Declaration of Independence, and some of the first laws, but he also made a large land purchase (Louisianna Territory), loved reading, invented, and enjoyed farming. This week, we will write a short script and draw a picture of Thomas Jefferson. We will then use an app called Chatterkid to show what we know about Thomas and his contributions to America.
