*How can I make writing more meaningful for my child? How do I really know what they are reading? These are two questions that are completely related. If you have these questions, have your child write in a journal after they finish reading. Have them summarize what happened, or give the main idea and key details. Perhaps you ask them to write about what they think will happen next in the book, or why a certain character may have done a certain action they did. By doing these things (not all in one night. ;) ) you will have a better understanding of what your child is retaining from their reading, and you can also work on their writing skills as well. Make sure they use capitalization & punctuation appropriately, correct spelling of common words, and check to see if they are using subject-verb agreement (I have three dogs......instead of I has three dogs.)
