Math- In math we are continuing to work on place value. Believe it or not, place is different than value. When discussing the place, we are looking for 'ones, tens, hundreds' as answers. When discussing the value, we are looking for ' six, thirty, two hundred' For example, if the number is 274 and we ask the value of the tens place, the value is seventy. If we ask, what is the place of the 7 the answer would be tens. Now that those are clear, we are also working on understanding and explaining when numbers are greater/more than, or less than a number. We have hundreds charts and place value blocks to help children with this concept, but simply understanding 'place' and 'value' really help make this much easier. Later this week we will look at ordering numbers, and putting numbers on a number line.
RELA- This is the final week for our writing of a small moment. A BIG thank you to our writing helpers! The children (AND I) love having you come help!!! As of now, your child can write about a small moment in time, add detail through pictures and writing, (some are even adding dialogue!), use transition words such as 'and, then, last,' write across three or more pages, use bold words and ellipses (those three periods to build suspense) and they are trying to create endings. Not only that, but the past week they have even used the special editing pens to make revisions. These little writers are really working hard!!! As far as reading is concerned, we have been studying story elements. Last week we focused on characters and setting, while this week we are focusing on problem and solution. (This is similar to cause/effect, but not exactly.) The standard is to describe characters, settings, and major events in a story, using key details, therefore it is very important for you to have dialogue with your child about what they have read at night. This really encourages reading comprehension, and I cannot thank you enough for all your help at home with your children. You are doing a fabulous job!! In addition to all these wonderful things, we are also learning about plural nouns. We are focusing on adding -s, -es, and -ies to the end of words. We are not touching on the rule of 'f' changing to 've.'
Social Studies- Last week, this week, and next week we will be learning about Benjamin Franklin. The children have really focused on his inventions. Today we learned that Mozart, and Beethoven composed music specifically for one of his inventions, the armonica. Did you know that he helped form the first: library, post office, hospital, sanitation department, and fire department? He also is the one to admire for daylight savings time, the second hand on a clock, and the odometer. It's amazing to think of how he not only wrote documents that helped shape our country, but he also invented many things that we still use today.
