Friday-NO SCHOOL (Professional Development)
Monday (13th) NO SCHOOL (Professional Development)
Math- This week in math we are continuing our focus on time to the hour and half hour. We will also be looking at word problems that deal with time, such as 'My friend starts reading at 1:00. He reads for 30 minutes. What time does he finish reading?
The study guide will come home on Wednesday of this week. Please please please help reinforce the hour hand is the short hand and the minute hand is the long hand. (The word minute is long like the long hand. ;) ) The children are doing so much better at reading the time, but when asked to draw the hour and minute hand they are getting it confused. I have some clock stamps and can stamp pages in their math journal for you to practice with them at home. Please let me know if that is something that interests you. ;)
Reading- This week we are focusing on a language arts standard for our grammar and reading. It is standard L4 which states that children can determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple meaning words and phrases based on grade 1 reading and content. So, we will be working with multiple meaning words (park ...to park a car, and to go to a park; bowl....I eat ice cream in a bowl, I like to bowl on the weekend) as well as homonyms (specifically homophones which are words that sound the same but are spelled differently. (Deer, Dear). There is a great BrainpopJr on this to help clarify this concept. We will also be working on context clues and looking for clues at the sentence level while also using the pictures for information to help with unknown words. This is a good reading strategy. So many fun things going on during such a short week. :)
Science/Social Studies- We are wrapping up our unit on water as it relates to weather. The kids had a great time doing experiments to see if frozen water weighs the same as liquid water, and watching water evaporate over time, as well as the water cycle with our water cycle baggies. During this week, we will do a pre-assessment to see what they know about our upcoming Social Studies figure.
Hope you all have a great and healthy week. :)
