We want to wish an especially warm welcome to our new student Jippe Visser! We are so excited to have him in our class. He s such is a sweet boy!
In December, I mentioned that our school would be implementing something called WINN (What I Need Now) time. This will begin on Monday, January 13. It will be Monday through Thursday mornings. What that means to you as a parent...your child will be getting 30 minutes each day of enriched or remediated instruction depending on your child's specific learning needs (hence "What I need now".) As a grade level different teachers will teach different content areas (math, science, etc..) and the students will rotate to the different teachers throughout the course of the month. Since this is something new, the different grade levels are approaching it in different ways and we'll see what works best. :)
Math- This week we will be solidifying our concept of perimeter. We will also review area, geometry, and story problems. We will start our study guide tomorrow, and our end of Unit 4 test will be Wednesday, January 15th.
Reading/ELA- In reading/English language arts we are focusing on poetry this week. Today we talked about Acrostic poems, and we hope to look at haiku, cinquain, and diamonte. In addition, we are looking at comparative and superlatives again, as well as 'strong' words and abstract nouns. Strong words are more descriptive than average words. For example, "The air was cold......vs.....The air was frigid." When looking at abstract nouns, we are looking at nouns that are not concrete. Some examples of abstract nouns are: marriage, childhood, goal, dream, and truth.
Science- Today we took a step waaaaayyy back into time. We are beginning to study fossils. Today we learned there are different types of fossils, and that fossils take many years to form.
