In math, we will begin comparing fractions and looking at improper fractions (that equal a whole number). In third grade children are only comparing fractions that have a like denominator, or a like numerator, so they need to understand that as the denominator gets bigger (the bottom number), the pieces get smaller. In regards to the improper fractions, we will work with numbers like 12/6 =2, and 9/3=3, etc. There will be problems like this on their test, which we are looking at a tentative date of March 4th.
With regards to reading/language arts, we will begin working on informational writing again. We will be reviewing reading concepts of compare/contrast, and asking/answering questions by looking back in the text.
In science we will take a deeper look into magnets! Today the children got to be scientists and make predictions and observations about what items attract magnets. Next week, we will learn about how magnets are used in everyday life, and how they can help save time. We may even have a 'treasure hunt' like we're on the beach with a metal detector. :)
**Next week we will celebrate Valentine's Day on Thursday at the end of the day. Your child needs to bring in a Valentine's Day cards/items for each child in the class. I have included a class list in the VIP folder, and in the email.
**Remember, we will not have school on Friday, February 14th, and Monday, February 17. Enjoy the break! :)
